In the beginning of the film, Nick (Michael Cera) introduces himself as a guy that women have zero interest in him. We watch an example of his theory while he’s picking films in a video store. DVD’s shown in the classics section: Jacques Tati’s Play Time (1967), Monte Hellman’s Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Jean-Luc Godard’s À bout de souffle (1960), Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express (1994). Also, a poster is seen, Paul McGuigan’s Lucky Number Slevin (2006).
He sees a beautiful girl from schoo. Behind him, we can see the poster of Stephen Daldry’s The Reader (2008) and Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole (1951) DVD.
He tries to impress her with a Federico Fellini’s La Strada (1954) DVD.
The only thing he gets is several insults from her friend.
